wizardsandwars
I can get any website in the planet in the number 1 spot of a search results. Number 1. The very top spot, GUARANTEED. I only charge $100. The seach term will be 'supercalifragilistic widgets xpalodocious' The point is, Ryan, is that you are coming awfully close to getting suckered. There are a few phrases out there that you really have to watch out for. Anyone that tells you that they will guarantee top 10 search results, is trying to rip you off. I personally guarantee it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. However, number 1, even guaranteed number 1, does not mean higher sales when you have a bad site or sell stuff nobody wants or both. so even if you have enough money and buy google and get nr 1 that way on all searches, all it will guarantee is higher traffic, not sales. wizardsandwars
And, you really need to research the search phrases you are optimizing. Im my example, you could easily get the very top position for hte key phrase, 'supercalifragilistic widgets xpalodocious'. But how many people per month do you really think will search for that? Probably none. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. rklamot
hmm sounds interesting, gentlemen. I do know SEO companies that offer top 10 ranking guarantees with the keywords as mentioned already. However, you get to choose the keywords, such as 'video game sales' for video game websites. lol i dont think theyd get any business if they used 'supercalifragilistic widgets xpalodocious' for sites that have nothing to do with the keyword :-"
wizardsandwars
That's exactly right. But if someone guarantees you top 10 placement for the key phrase 'video game sales', then they are full of sh*t. Guaranteed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. wizardsandwars
Actually, analyzing that SERP, 'video game sales', it appears to not be nearly as compeditive as I thought at first. While it would still be very difficult to hit that top spot, it probalby wouldn't be as difficult as I had thought at first. There's only 12 million results. usually, anything under 15 million or so, and you have a chance at getting in the first couple of pages. If you did land in the first page of the search results of 'video game sales', I guess that there are probably under 1000 people that search for that phrase on google per month. Unless you are in the number one position of the results, you can expect only about 1/4 of those people to click on your link, which means you'll net about 7 unique visitors per day. On the other hand, 'video games', 'free video games' or 'buy video games' on the other hand would bring in 100 times more traffic, but would be next to impossible to get in the first page of the search results. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. Guest
so what does everyone suggest then regarding getting higher up in search engines? somebody has told me about links but i didn't understand the first time round, so i'll check with them again. They reckon they have very good links and they make it to the top 3 in the search engines.

Jack_mcs
The trick is to choose the proper keyword and then you build your page around that keyword. Which is the correct keyword for you? That takes research. . niknakgroup
mmmm. OK, some basic mis-understandings going on here, and wizardsandwars and boxtel have been doing their best to clarify, but you are basically looking at tis the wrong way round. It is no good saying "I want to be number one in Google" and working backwards from there. You need to think "What does my site offer" and build upwards. You need to identify your sites main product/service/unique selling point, then go and do some very very serious research on which keywords are being searched for in volume in relation to your site. As an example, you sell doggy keyrings. this is a very specific search term, which only probably 20 people a month would look for across the whole planet. Being #1 for "doggy keyrings" is therefore next to useless. However, "keyrings" would be a very good keyword to be #1 for, though the traffic this would generate would most likely not be targetted to your audience and this would mean that your site would look extremely busy and sell next to nothing. So, in this example it would make sense to offer a small selection of generic keyrings, or target your sales from the other side and try to reach #1 for "dog lovers" or "pet owners" - this would give you access to people who love dogs, and therefore be much mroe amenable to a product doggy related. As for how to get to #1 - three things - 1 - Link popularity - RELEVANT links, not simply being in every link farm going, and not exchanging links with every casino and realtor around, but exchanging quality links with doggy related sites or sites to do with keyrings. Also submissions to the correct categories in the many directories out there. Make sure your anchor text is targetting your keywords. 2 - On site optimisation - I wont bore you with details on this, the osc forums are crammed with advice on how to optimise your osc store - go do your research! 3 - Content. If your site has good, original and plentiful content on your target market, you will perform, well in the engines for a wide range of terms related to your product. This will generate TARGETTED traffic which will be much easier to convert into sales. Dont ask how do I get to number 1 - ask how you can make your site better, then work upwards from there. Please note - if I have suggested a contrib above, it doesnt mean it will work! Most of the contribs are not ones I've used, but may be useful for your particular problem.... Have you tried a refined search? Chances are your problem has already been dealt with elsewhere on the forums..... if (stumped == true) { return(square_one($start_over) } else { $random_query = tep_fetch_answer($forum_query) }
wizardsandwars
yeah, how do the ppl in the first top 10 manage? Good question. For resonably compeditive search terms, it doesn't hapen quickly. First you painstakenly optimize each individual page of your site for one or two unique key phrases. There are a list of about 1000 different acceptable ways to optimize a page for a search phrase. The most important are .. - Have inbound links from other websites (hundreds) that link to the page you're trying to optimize, with the key phrase in the anchored text (between the <a></a>) - Include the key phrase in the meta title, at the beginning. - Have internal links to the page from within your website, where the key phrase is in the anchored text. - Insert the key phrase once on the page within an <H1></H1> tag. - Include about 200 words of text content on the page, and include the key phrase 3 or 4 times, MAX. - Insert the key phrase into 5 or 6 of the images on the page, in the alt tag - Get links from as many different search directories as possible. Yes, I recommend paying the $300 per year for the Yahoo direcotry. But there are a couple of dozen really good free ones as well. As stated before, try to get the key phrase in the anchored text if they allow it. ! Remember that each page of your website needs to be optimized for a different key phrase. If you do all that, you'll be about 95% of the way. There are alot more things you can do, but none of them will give you as much bang for the buck as these. But even doing all this, if its a compeditive key phrase, like "Buy Video Games", you have virtually no hope of getting in the top couple of pages unless you have 1000's of inbound links. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. shaunklink
thanks for the tips guys....... a good example of the topic (for the newbs looking through the forums): the company I work for (wi-gear.com) is making bluetooth headphones called 'iMuffs'. Were pushing the bluetooth word around as much as possible, and were already linked to many many blogs.... anyways, if you type in bluetooth, you see giant companies like apple, and palm, and official bluetooth company things.....if you type in iMuffs though you get ALOT of hits.....but thats only because the name is so unique... hopefully we can get high up on the "bluetooth headphone" list...
