configuration woes.

hi, i'm attempting to set up a shop for a client, and have been unsuccesful. the first time i ran the installer, it got to step 7 and was talking about changing configure.php to chmod706configure.php (or was asking something of the nature), although when i did that it didn't work. it said that configuration was successful, but ran this slew of error messages:

The configuration was successful!

 

and attempting to access my catalog/admin/configuration.php yields:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in /usr/www/users/luakabop/catalog/admin/includes/functions/database.php on line 19

Unable to connect to database server!

i've been attempting to alter the config files to reflect database information, but it seems as though the installation should not result in such woes.

any help would be greatly appreciated.....
