na0miii
Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone here will be kind enough to help me out! I have a store on Ebay Australia, and I would like to move it to my own site. I have spend weeks researching what I will need, but am still confused with all the products on offer. I need a shopping cart, and I want to accept credit cards, but not as a merchant with monthly fees. So, so far I've worked out that my costs are: 1. Get a domain name 2. Website designed 3. Web hosting - with extra costs for shopping cart and SSL? 4. Pay a merchant for third party credit card acceptance. Have a missed anything? Can I combine these costs by using one provider somehow? The other issue I have is the website design. I have definite ideas about the simple design I would like, have even got the jpgs and colours ready, but unfortunately I have not done any web design, although I do have Photoshop at home and can use this, and used to work in invitation design etc. What is your opinion on perhaps purchasing Frontpage and giving it a shot myself? Am I crazy?! I don't have a large profit margin to work with, and I just want to keep it as simple as possible, not spend a fortune on setting up. Please help me out! Naomi x <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Oscommerce runs on php and not as a html website so front page is not an option. I use front page basicly to edit html page sorces only and use the parts that I need. The oscommerce standard install has bacisly every thing you need including paypal as a payment option. There are lots of add on that you can select from the ,Contributions Area that you might want to add including one of the first (MUST DO THINGS)setting up you admin protection. ( WARNING ) I think I know what Im talking about. BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP
JEWbacca
3. Web hosting - with extra costs for shopping If you use somthing like osC there should be NO EXTRA COST. Can I combine these costs by using one provider somehow? There are alot of sites that you can get hosting, SSL and a domain from... Am I crazy?!? Doing HTML in an editor such as Frontpage is one thing... but when you start trying to customize php pages you will have some issues if you have never done such work. You might want to do a google search for osCommerce Templates... see if anything that is out there will work for you. While you could do your own the time investment alone might not be worth it... Good Luck. Nate
dave111
1. Get a domain name2. Website designed 3. Web hosting - with extra costs for shopping cart and SSL? 4. Pay a merchant for third party credit card acceptance. 1) Yes, buy a domain name between $6-$10 2) If you looking to design yourself with an html layout try using STS (http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,1524) this will allow you to design the layout in an html format (still requires some php knowledge and alot of css knowledge for the fine tweaking) If you do not wish the time design the site yourself either buy a premade design or have a design custom made, should not cost you more than $200 either way. 3) Webhosting, you can find webhosting for as low at $2 or $3 a month, including a shared SSL. Shared SSL is all thats really neccessary, if you decide to buy a SSL for your specific domain then maybe $25-$75 for the cert and $10-$20 to install it. 4) This is a must, you NEED some way to process credit cards, you cannot just get the number and call your bank to make a deposit or something. If you looking for low cost startup Paypal is always an easy place to start (and as you already have an ebay store, must already have a paypal account) Best of all osCommerce is FREE so these are all your costs. So heres the total costs. Domain $10 Hosting $3 per month Credit card fees 2-5% depending on what merchant account you get. Total $13 start up! And even you get custom made design your still probably looking at no more than $100 startup!
