heretoo
Whose links should I get if you are a small business retail store. I am sure Amazon is number 1 but I sure do not want to compete with them? Mayeb I am just deeply confused  1. Get Those Inbound Links Since Google ranks your pages according to the number of links pointing at your page, it stands to reason that you should try to get as many links pointing at your pages as possible. This is so obvious that I'm only mentioning it for completeness sake.
Guest
Try by submitting to free recip-free directories. Here are some to get you started: Dmoz, Skaffe, Joeant, Gimpsy, Websavvy, Wowdirectory, GoGuides, web-beacon Also, look through this site for more: http://www.isedb.com/ Directory links are good because they are often high PR and very relevant links. Good luck.
wizardsandwars
Good advice. Also, look through the directorys, and find other high PR sites that are similar, but not selling the exact same thing as you, and asking them to trade links. These links won't be as good as the free one way links, but they certianly don't hurt. If you can, make sure the anchored text on the inbound links contain your main 'key phrase'. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. Jack_mcs
Google decides your Page Rank (PR) based on the number and quality of backlinks. When it comes to determing your position in the index, which is much more important, PR plays a minor role. Still, it shouldn't be ignored. You should add as many links as you can. With just around 50 backlins, you can get a PR of 3 (again, depends on the quality of the backlinks). To get a higher PR, you will need many more of them or ones with a high PR, which is very hard for new sies to get. You should only get links that relate to your site. If you sell baby clothes, it wouldn't help you much to get links from automobile supply sites, unless they sold baby seats I suppose. There are free directories and link exchange sites that will help you get more links. There is a thread here somewhere that lists a numbe of good ones. Search for backlinks and you may find it. One very easy source of backlinks that many people overlook is links to yourself in the footer. The SE's count these as real links to you. However, don't use the standard FILENAME_DEFAULT in the link since it adds the index.php to the url and these are counted differently than ones without it.
