Okay I am close to giving up.

I get the common "Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file" error message. I have been through about 20 posts on this forum. I have changed the permsions to read only. Still didn't work. I have even tried that little php script that was suggest -no luck.

I have called the Hosting Company and they are telling me that the file is read only.

I have also tried the installation twice. To be sure.

SO. Do I assume that it is a bug in OScommerce, and just comment out the error message?

I don't want to be leaving a hole in the system.

Advice please.

There are two configure.php files - one in /includes/ and the other in /admin/includes - make sure you have set permissions on both.

first make sure you chmod both config files, if that fails, go into the file manager of the clients control panel, and chmod it from there.

Try the little script in this post:

I think the issue is server permissions. They're not letting ftp clients set chmod.

Tools: BBEdit, Coda, Versions (Subversion), Sequel Pro (db management)

Check to see if you have a second configure.php file in includes/local

Some installs create one. If so that's the one osC is reading and the one to change (or delete).

Yup, tried bot configure.php files. (0644, 0444, 0400) a lot of combos. No luck.

Tried the script.

Tried my hosting company ? though I don't trust these guys.

Oh well.

you dont need to go to your hosting company to chmod files through your cpanel, unless of course you do not have a cpanel; in which case you should not be there. :-"

If you like, you can PM me your login info for your hosting and ftp and i can see if i can fix it for you, or try a fresh install. :D

Pls ask you hoster if PHP runs as CGI module (and NOT as Apache) under suPHP or suexec.

More info www.suphp.org.

In that case you file is already protected, forget about the warning and comment the error message.

xtra check to see if includes/configure.php is writable

first make sure you chmod both config files, if that fails, go into the file manager of the clients control panel, and chmod it from there.

This means go to cpanel/plesk (or whatever hosting admin panel you have) then look for a "file manager" option. After you find this navigate to the includes/configure.php.

Change the permissions to 444 through this webbased file managed. This problem is probably because some hosting doesnt allow you change CHMOD through FTP (as already mentioned in this post)
