About OSC "depreciation" and aging...

I have been wondering about the possibility of an OSC site becoming "broken" due to upgrades in server software, browsers, etc. Is this an issue that could really emerge?

For instance, if I am using a OSC 2.2 store and my host updates PHP or Apache, is there a danger of this store breaking?

Theoretically, how long could an unupdated OSC store remain functional given today's trends in updating browsers, OS's, servers, etc?

Yes, in fact it already has been an issue in the past, and will be an issue again in the very near future.

When php5 comes out, and all servers have upgraded to it, I'm pretty sure it's going to break everyone's cart that hasn't upgraded to the latest php5 complient version.
