Poor picture quality...... why?

The small images on my site seem to be very poor quality and I don't understand why!

The large images (found on the product page) are 150x120 while the images on the different catagory pages are 100x80 --- the actual image size is 150x120.

What I don't understand is why it does not scale down better, all the proportions are the exact same.

I have looked at a few of the thumbnail contributions but none seem to install/ work as they suggest they do.... can anyone suggest the 'best' thumbnail contribution?

Here is a link to a catagory page with 'poor' images:

http://blackwidowsecurity.com/ipodstore/in...ables-c-29.html

Here is a few links to items found on that page with 'good' images:

http://blackwidowsecurity.com/ipodstore/ip...rface-p-57.html

http://blackwidowsecurity.com/ipodstore/ch...rface-p-55.html

If anyone has any suggestions/ideas i'm all ears!

Thanks,

Nate

They are about as good as you are going to get, since you are starting from a thumbnail to begin with, the result is never going to be that great.

To confirm this, I opened a few of your images in photoshop and manually resized - the results were very similar.

You need a high quality good size image as a starting point to make quality thumbnails. 150*120 won't cut it.

Thanks for your reply. How big would you suggest starting with?

For me, it is more important for my big picture to be good quality than the one on the categories page-- but I would like for them to both be good (I want too much!).

I have high resolution pictures of all my products, I even changed the product_info.php code to get the images from a /large/ directory so I could use my high res. images on the popup images.

If I do use larger pictures I will need a thumbnail contribution for sure, right? Is there one you suggest?

Thanks,

Nate

PS: I have a question about the attribute system, if anyone has an idea please let me know!

You will need a thumbnail contribution, since those images are around 40k each and are being resized by the browser.

You might get slightly better results using jpg format, rather than gif, and experimenting with the compression. Don't know if any thumbnail contribs can do this or not. No, I can't recommend a thumbnail contrib as I always resize manually.
