edjusted
Hi, I'd like to know if this is possible and/or how easy it'd be to do... I'm trying to build a product catalog for our company (we have thousands of sku's) but at the moment, the site will be for *informational* purposes only. We do *not* want people to be able to add items to the shopping cart, etc. The site will just show pictures of our products with their descriptions and such. Can I possibly use osCommerce for something like this with minimal effort? e.g. just "turn off" the shopping cart feature? The reason I'm considering osCommerce instead of a "real" CMS-type or other type of solution is that if one day we *do* decide to offer online shopping, I could then just "turn it on" without having to create a whole new web site. Wendy James
this contribution may be just what you need... if you do away with the registration. http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,601 "Provide a new configuration variable: "Allow Guests to See Prices". ♥Vger
Rename the Check/Money Order module to something like "Enquiries", and edit the text that someone would get when they place an order, to say something like "Thank you for your enquiry about blah blah blah", and don't enable any other payment modules. This way your site remains fully functional, but people get to make enquiries about items they've added to their 'order' instead of actually buying them. This allows you to get back to them via mail or phone to make an offline sale. Vger
Wendy James
That would definately work but wouldn't the Contact Us link be easier for customers wanting to ask about something? The thought of filling out all of my information just to ask something would push me away from the site. The contribution I linked can be turned on and off so they don't have to edit anything once they want to make the site "active" for sales other than click. ♥Vger
If people want to enquire about a list of items it's easier for them to add them via the cart than having to type them manually into the Contact Us page, and the Create Account function can be cut right down to Name, email address and password easily enough.
