Customizing Search for site

Ok assume I am a newbie who has searched but not found the answer to this whistling.gif I need to change the advance search to be more relevant for my store (In this case a Music, DVD, Poster and related clothing site) How do I change the fields in the advanced search and more importantly how do I make it to where the search for those fields actually finds what the customer is looking for?
