jk2000 Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 Hello, You have a domain name and have given your store a name and have set it up and running online. Question: 1.) Although the domain name is now registered under your name, do you still need to do something more to protect it? 2.) What do you need to do to protect your web site logo? How & where to file for patent? Can one do it by himself and how much does it approximately cost? Thanks.
Wendy James Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 Google is your friend... along with all the other search engines. Try doing a search on "How to copyright" "how to copyright a logo" "how to copyright a name" "trademarks" etc. etc. Tons of information out there. Guest Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 My Webpage A good trick is to just do it. It works on the theory that if you come up with a patented idea, you would put it in a sealed envelope and then mail it to yourself through registered mail(just don't open it). That way if it ever does go to court or someone else steals your idea you have evidence that you came up with the idea first, because it will be sealed in an envelope with a date stamped on it. Go to the following 2-sites and you will have all the info you will need. www.copyright.gov www.uspto.gov

I think it would be evidence enough to have a registered domain name and have been trading under that name, as your registration for the domain will define when you purchased it.
Guest Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 You cannot copyright an 'idea' :-" You would not apply for a patent on a logo - you can apply for a trademark - copyright is automatic (just make sure you can prove when you created it). Matti
dreamscape Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 trademarks are sort of automatic too (in the US at least), but you can only get a trademark for the area you do business in (though this is kind of fuzzy for an online business)... You can use the TM symbol without applying for the trademark. If you apply and get it registered, then you use the Registered Trademark symbol (R in the circle: ?)
