selecting multiple items to add to cart

Is there an easy way to allow a user to add multiple items to their cart? Ex.: a customer does a search for 'bean' and is directed to a results page with 27 different kinds of beans. Is there a way for the customer to easily add 14 beans to their cart without having to go to each individual product description page? I was thinking something like checkboxes then add selected to cart. Does something like this exist already?

Thanks,

Miles

Thanks for the suggestions Wendy, but I guess I didn't explain myself well enough. My client is selling downloadable maps so it wouldn't be an entirely uncommon practice to buy a series of adjoining maps, but not multiple copies of the same map. What the client wants to be able to do is, for example, navigate to a sub-category where there are a series of adjoining maps and be able to select a number of them to be added to the cart simultaneously.

Is that clearer?

Thanks again,

Miles

Is there a way to replace the "Buy now" column with "add to cart"? I think this would be close enough for my needs - i.e. a user is never more than 1 back button away from their category or search listing. As well, with the setting in admin so that adding an item doesn't take you to the cart page, you can do a search and then click each item's add to cart button without leaving the page. If the customer needs to see more info about any item, they can click on the item name to get to the product description page.

If anybody has already done this, or if there is an easy way to do this through configuration settings, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Miles
