Dropship / Vendor Images Mod

The ability to enable vendors of our products to refer to our and manufacturers images using the Easy Populate to upload the products, and allow the V_Products_Image to allow a "http://www.ourserver.com/images/productimage.jpg"

We host the pics on different servers and the servers of our manufacturers, and want to be able to Link Product Images via URL.

There is a german contribution in the contributions section, which I tried, but it never worked!

I know of a few people that would find this benificial

There are two problems if you plan to hotlink images from your vendor's server.

1. Your SSL pages will produce a "Security Error" if the hotlinked images are not on a secure server.

2. Based on my testing, it appears that the images will load slower.

Oh... you'll have a third problem if you don't get your vendor's permission for hotlinking the images.

Personally, I would feel more confortable hosting the images myself since I would be able to easily troubleshoot issues.

Regarding the issues mentioned above,

1. The only part of my store that uses the SSl is the Payment Gateway, which is separate from the rest of the site - so I wouldn't mind

2. The images will load slower depending on the host server. And our images are all small.

3. We have the permission of the manufacturers, as we are their authorised distributors.

I have now got my site working properly and with many thanks to drawesome007 for all the help.

I suggest if you're using this mod, to include the contribution "Disable right Click + mouse select V1.1, Released By: Ferry B." available by Clicking Disable Right Click

This disables images from being copied and also stops people viewing the image source and finding your supplier

I'm glad it's working for you, however I suggest that you make note of a few things:

1. If you have a "specials box" with a hotlinked image, you should hide it when displaying SSL pages.

(Otherwise you'll get the security error)

2. A status of "authorized distributor" does not explicitly give the right to use your supplier's bandwidth.

(I'm glad that you were given the authorization)

3. Disabling right click will not protect your images.

If a competitor is committed to determining your source and supplier, he could easily disable javascript or use Firefox.

Just my 2 cents,

Robert

Thank You for the tips Rob.

Some valid points you've made.

I'll make sure I get permission to hotlink from them.

Just ebcause you're authorized to sell their products and use their images doesn't necessarily mean they want you or will let you hotlink to the images on their servers. Be sure to specifically check with them first. Oops.. Just noticed someone already said that.

Disabling right-click is useless unless you also encrypt the source code.

Right, to clear it up a little, I have managed to get the manufacturer to send me a CD of their images. This I will upload to my server and bandwidth problem solved.

It will also solve the right click issue, because the url points to my server.

Thanx everyone for your inputs. Much appreciated.
