propertopper Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Hi I'm interested in getting a bit of feedback regarding my online clothing site. I'm aware of various imperfections which need addressing and there's loads more stock due to go on soon, but putting that aside, I'm interested to know what every else thinks of it. Thanks Mark www.threadsntreads.com
Guest Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 why do people spend time and money changing a sites look but neglect to change those rubbish standard osCommerce pictures, sort it out.
AfterDark Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 you used a free skin ( of mine) and changed the logo element of it - what you want reviewed?

propertopper Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 I'm going to have to bite my lip here because of the forum rules (not that they got in the way of your geeky comments). I came here in good faith having spent literally a week messing about with code and technology I'd previously never imagined I could understand and as you pointed out, evidently still don't. I've spent a lot of time trying things out, have reinstalled oscommerce 4 times and despite all that I've got 70% of the way towards what I'm after. AfterDark. Your free skin is great, really great but your logo was pretty boring, particularly for an online clothing site. So I changed it. I don't see the problem, though I'm happy to be corrected. If I'd stuck to your logo and not done anything at all I'd have been slated. mikeq. "sort it out" ? "sort it out" ? I asked for some constructive criticism but somehow got your worked up enough to tell me to "sort it out"? Your wife must love you. If you have a wife. Jumping Rabbit. You're calling somebody else smug? Based on your reply you'd win awards for smugness. My situation is that I'm sat at home with a 2 year old child full time and wanted a bit of an outlet doing something I was passionate about. Unfortunately, you people seem to think because I've not grown a beard, donned a Bart Simpson tie and got busy with "code" there's something wrong in that? I can take constructive criticism, even destructive criticism but you people are something else. I thank you for taking the time to type replies but you strike me as the types of people who wouldn't have the balls to say the things you've said on here to my face.

It's looking good, just keep on keepin on. You should fill out your shipping, conditions, and other information pages. If you are happy with the stock images, so be it...leave them be. We all have situations and yours makes you special in it's own way. You have over come great obsticals to get your store going, as many of us have. Pat yourself on the back and keep at it. I am not familiar with that skin, so if you have not changed the color scheme, maybe you should. Try to make it your own... Repost when you have some more inventory, your information pages filled out and things like that. Good Luck, Moon BTW, I like my beard, thats a bart simpson t-shirt, and nothings wrong with strokin some code!LOL "Woohoo, Just Havin Funnn!"
propertopper Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 Thanks for that moonbeam. There's still a lot to be done. I may change the background image to a simple colour but that's it. If keeping the skin pretty close to its original shows a lack of ambition to certain people on here then so be it. I'd rather impress my customers with the stock I'm trying to source than impressive geeks. Cheers for the input though moonbeam. I wasn't seeking sympathy or anything re: the circumstances I'm in. I'm not a single parents or anything. I'm quite fortunate that my mrs earns enough to keep us both, plus the little one and this shop is simply my way of being independent.
Guest Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 mikeq. "sort it out" ? "sort it out" ? I asked for some constructive criticism but somehow got your worked up enough to tell me to "sort it out"? Your wife must love you. If you have a wife. Chill mate, was meant tongue in cheek. It was constructive, those stock osCommerce pics are pants, I suggest you change them to complete the look of your site to a more professional effort. I would have absolutely no problem telling you that to your face.
propertopper Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 The thing is, I know those stock oscommerce images are (as you gayly put it) "pants". It was your tone. I don't think demanding I "sort it out" is particularly constructive.
rommany Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 Hello mark Here is what i see hope it helps but im sure you will bite my head off. You logo text in title does'nt look that good ( a bit fuzzy ), get rid of the catalog and change the top to home in the breadcrumbs, both lead to the same place anyway. think about investing in a ssl, i for one and most people would not buy from a unsecure site. when i clicked you enlarge part on one of the trainers it came up the same size so no joy there, Some of the trainers are taking up the whole site, you will need to sort that out. I like your background but find it a little dark and moody but thats your taste. I have two monsters under 5s running around my knees and i know how hard it is to set up a site, i thought when i started this it would be easy and i would earn a little extra, how wrong i was, learning formats php designing and so on, but thats just the tip of an ice berg, You will have to start adding you site to directories and that where the fun starts : (..... but as in life you get out of it what you put in. Ive been working on my site now for 6 mts and for 8hrs a day and thats every day and i dont thing im 1/4 started. last thing sort out your meta tags, if you are not sure what to do just ask again. Add the header tag contribution. Apart from that it looks nice and loads pretty fast and its a good start. Thats about it from me, ask for more feedback when you have done that lot. Kind regards Ps hope you are backing up before you do anything to your site,
rommany Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 Me again this is you meta tags, search around and read up about them Meta tags report for: http://www.threadsntreads.com/ meta tag length value Title: 10 osCommerce Meta tags analysis. propertopper Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 Perfect. Thanks for that. A lot of it was stuff I knew I'd need to get round to at some point, particularly the images situation. I'm still feeling my way through all that. Same with the meta tags. Know what I'm doing with that I think. Thanks for your input.
rommany Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 Your welcome mark Hard work hey, who would have ever guessed : )
Guest Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 okay apologies for the "sort it out" I should have put it like this [tongue in cheek, cockney accent]Sort it out[/tongue in cheek, cockney accent] Not quite sure where you are going with the "if you have a wife" and "gayly" comments, but I have obviously annoyed you so I'll leave it there
rommany Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 I think we all get a little knacked and stressed sometimes, this web stuff drives us newbies mental. Anyway, the way i look at it is that when people start making a website and gets to know how much real hard work it is they just give up after a few months or so, the people stick with it and puts up with the rough time will see the results ( One day ) but rome wasnt build over night. so as im a south londoner SORT IT OUT : ) Good luck and may your days be long and your pockets full.... Regards

Thanks for your input. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi propertopper Not sure if you'll still be reading this thread ( :D ) but... hang in there and work on the site bit by bit. Some stuff has much higher priority than others and people on here are usually pretty good at pointing it out (although not always tactfully, including myself  ). If it's any consolation, I'm a fairly experienced HTML coder and after 3 months of working with osC, I'm only now starting to feel comfortable with it. I've pretty much redone the entire layout of my latest store (My Webpage), but there's no need to do that to be successful. I like your trainers... but I'd need a compelling reason to buy them from your website rather than Schuh or Foot Locker or somewhere. Stick in there and develop as thick a skin as possible if posting on this forum. A lot of people here work on one site they are really passionate about... you are not alone

Regarding the trainers, our hand a really heavily tied on the pricing at the moment but the idea is that our prices will be lower than Schuh and co, simply because I don't have shops, staffing, warehouses etc. Just a space cleared in my house. Another thing with my site is that we're hoping to create a bit of a community and make the site an information source as well as a place to buy rare trainers and clothing.
mj_superfly Posted June 25, 2005 Posted June 25, 2005 Excellent - that's exactly what I meant... giving people a reason other than price or convenience to visit and buy. Best of luck
