Paypal IPN time expired error

I have paypal IPN set up on my site. About half the time, it works fine, no problems at all. But about half the time, customers complete their order, but when they are taken to paypal's site, they enter their info then get an error that said time had expired. The result is about half the orders hang at Preparing IPN and never get paid.

 

Any idea what might cause this?

When I installed PayPal IPN, because I was loosing order details with standard PayPal, I had exactly the same problem on my main computer. But when I logged onto my kids computer in the other room it worked fine!!!

 

The only difference is I have Windows XP home with SP2 installed and my kids hav Windows XP Pro with no service pack installed?

 

I had other problems with PayPal IPN and so decided not to use it
