Formatting/seaprating the category list

Is there any way to divide the category listing up into separate boxes?

 

Just a quick hypothetical sample:

 

 

In other words, I'd have two branches of products, but I don't want the customer to have to click on "womens" or "mens" to open up the subcategories - and I don't want them all jumbled in the same box anyway.

 

Is the only option to code it statically in html, manually adding the links, etc? (and have to edit the html any time a category is changed)
