willross
Buying on the Web is nice, isn't it? Unless you live in the same state an e-commerce site is based in, you don't have to pay sales tax. (Technically, if a sales tax is not collected, you're supposed to pay use tax, but nobody does.) This can be very convenient, especially for big purchases, and is certainly one factor that drives people to shop on the Web. But states are complaining that they're losing billions of dollars a year in much-needed revenue, and some municipalities have been forced to levy additional local taxes to pick up the shortfall for public schools and other government services. The truth is that most e-commerce companies don't even come close to doing taxes right, and companies that have been able to skirt state and local sales tax for years will have to start paying the piper once federal support for the Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP) kicks in. petermichaux
Perhaps Paypal (and others) will make a service that will collect and send the tax to the correct state?
Guest
I've been asking about this for almost a year with no response. One second the bill is gung ho, and you can start collecting way back in Hanuary, next minute it's been pushed back until 2009, then it's back on for mandated collection on June 1st. I have no idea what is going on. I received the tax forms months ago stating I need to collect the new taxes, but I have nearly NO information on HOW. willross
worldwidedvds I was thinking about either modifying the existing tax module or creating an additional one for this called 'sstp.php'. This way the potential taxes can be added to the sale before I am forced to pay out. Then have an admin report that manages it. · willross ··········
GraphicsGuy
It is defininetly something that needs proactive consideration so that osc shop owners can be ready when it does come to be. A new order totals module supporting it, with an admin interface and reporting structure sounds perfect. But I'm not sure the states have established standards that are close enough to final to be of use in developing the reporting. It is highly unlikely that the federal govt. will alow it to be retroactive. It can not be enforced without changes in federal law. Federal level politicians rely heavily on campaign contributions from large companies and aren't likely to open them up to huge retroactive tax bills. As the article said, "money is a motivator". Rule #1: Without exception, backup your database and files before making any changes to your files or database. Rule #2: Make sure there are no exceptions to Rule #1. willross
GraphicsGuy True. I am going to start looking around and investigate what standards are being formed, etc. · willross ··········
