vinesun Posted June 7, 2005 Posted June 7, 2005 There's nothing actually for sale yet, but I spent the last couple of days trying to figure out what PHP and SQL are (I still don't know). Anyways, here are fruits of my labor. It looks how I wanted, it just took me forever to figure out how to get it from stock to not stock. I'm 18 and I have no coding knowledge, but I gave it my best shot. All constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. Thanks! My Shop
julianpuje Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 Don't want to be too harsh. But i had no idea what you sold without reading the text. I don't like the colors and the images in your cart and categories etc. Keep at it. Long way to go in my book. Good start though if you've never done it before. A little knowledge is dangerous, I SHOULD KNOW. If Life Begins At 40, What ends????
Wendy James Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 I actually like it a lot. It's nice to see sites that use oscommerce but have taken the time to change how it looks and make it their own. You did a great job with that. The only suggestion I have at this stage is maybe changing the text on the left, where the catagory images are to something a little more elgible. I like the cursive, but it is a bit hard to read. Also the text links in the boxes are very hard to read, and when you run your mouse over them they are blue... which doesn't match at all. Othewise really good job, can't wait to see what it looks like once there are products in there. Wendy James Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.
Evil Petting Zoo Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Very interesting look! Now I'm feeling bad about my pathetic site, which I have already put out there as "live".
Wendy James Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Why would you feel bad? Wendy James Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.
Evil Petting Zoo Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Why would you feel bad? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, everyone else purports to be a newbie, but they are coming up with such original and amazing thing. I am a true newbie and don't even know how to download and upload stuff! I don't know a thing about programming. My husband has managed to save me a couple of times when I messed up, but my site is really basic, just some changes I was able to make with File Manager. I have no idea what to do with contributions even though I would like to add some to my site. Like meta tags. Oh well, I have to wait until hubby has time to help. Here's My Pathetic site
Evil Petting Zoo Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Actually, I am pretty proud of what I managed to do with no knowledge, but this 18 year old who initiated this thread did SO great, it makes me wish I had time to dedicate to learning some php!
Wendy James Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 It just takes time. =) Have you visited the tips and tricks area? Lots of great information there. Your site isn't bad. I have seen worse when surfing around. >_< You just need to try things, can't be afraid to mess up. Just make sure you have a back up copy of any file you are working on incase there is a problem. vinesun Posted June 10, 2005 Author Posted June 10, 2005 Thanks for the feedback everyone; it's good to know that people are on both ends of the spectrum. And I agree w/ wendyjames, your site definitely could be a lot worse; I don't think it's bad at all. I must have had to delete my entire site and start over at least 3 times before I got it to look the way I wanted...it took FOREVER. It's just a lot of trial and error. Once you've done something once, anyhow, it's easier to do it the second (and third and fourth :P) times. You don't even have to learn PHP (I sure didn't)...it's just making sure that what ever you copy and paste doesn't mess stuff up.

And re: your site, I actually like it as well. You've done a good job with the pics contrib and now you need some SEO contribs for URLs and head tags. The biggest thing you could do, IMO, for credibility's sake: Go to godaddy and buy yourself an SSL cert and a domain name... -Garrett

And I'll go install an SEO contrib now, although I'm not entirely positive what they do. I have an idea, but not completely. Hehe, and FG is great  .
