Inventory tracking: attributes vs. products

Greetings,

 

I'm wondering about the inventory tracking abilites of oscommerce.

 

Each product has a quantity attribute that is incremented based on sales.

 

Say I'm selling a women's t-shirt available in Red and Blue.

 

Is the only way to track inventory separately to add them as separate prodcuts?

 

It would be nice if the inventory was based on attributes, not products.

 

Suggestions / Enlightenment appreciated.
