Guest
I am working on a site that has a webhost that allows you to create a Security Certificate through the cPanel control. Can this type of certificate be used? If so how? I reserched the forum and the osCommerce Knowledge Base but have not seen any topics on this exact question. Thanks in advance for any and all help. crash3903
normally when you order the security certificate through your control panel, the hosting company allocates it to your chosen domain name - that is my experience anyway Regards Mark A Reynolds

How do I use that certificate? I set mine up for my website through a shared one given to me by Pow Web. But what they gave me was just a link. How do I get the url for the certificate? Any Ideas? Thanks Again.

Guest
what is the link pow web gave you? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The link Pow Web gave me is for a different site. Not the same host. As I said in the earlier post I am trying to work on a different site and this host does not supply a shared url. They give you the ability to create a certificate. Unfortunatley I have had no luck getting any support from them, on how to use the certificate after it is created. Thanks
♥Vger
Okay, when you create a certificate using cPanel this is a self-signed certificate - which is worthless as far as using on a commercial website. Self-signed certs are not from a trusted issuer of such certs and will generate security warnings on each page - so no one will buy. But when you create a self-signed cert you have to enter certain information about your site, the company, location, what you sell etc. Once the self-signed cert has been generated you should also see a box with a heading Certificate Signing Request or CSR. You can take this text to buy a proper full ssl cert issued by someone like Geotrust, Veri-Sign, Thawte etc. (all trusted authorities). Guest
that explains things. the certificate you generated is for an ssl certificate request, which gets sent to comodo, thwate, etc for purchasing an ssl certificate which you then install on your server via the link your host provides
Guest
Ok, so I need to take the CSR that was created and go to Veri-Sign and purchase a secure certificate, correct? Thank you guys very much for the help. I could not get a single responce from that host. THANKS
♥Vger
Veri-Sign is very expensive. I would get a GeoTrust Express SSl from ev1servers.net - costs just $49 a year. Vger
bglkk
Vger means QuickSSL I believe. http://www.ev1servers.net/english/quickssldetails.asp Use it myself, installed through cPanel/WHM. Easy, no surprises. :) "Buy the ticket, take the ride..." -HST
Guest
one thing to note for what you get for $50, read this below, also think of how much your average transaction is . . . is why i tend to push away clients who want to use the low end certs . . . EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT CAUSED BY GEOTRUST'S WILLFUL MISCONDUCT, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE CUMULATIVE LIABILITY OF GEOTRUST TO APPLICANTS, SUBSCRIBER AND/OR ANY RELYING PARTY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATED TO THE USE OF OR RELIANCE UPON A CERTIFICATE OR FOR THE SERVICES PROVIDED HEREUNDER INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY CAUSE OF ACTION SOUNDING IN CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY, FOR BREACH OF A STATUTORY DUTY OR IN ANY OTHER WAY EXCEED FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS ($50.00). they do not exceed $50.00 for a transaction for an extra $20 you can get one for up to $2500
Guest
Thanks for all the help!!!!! :D Greatly appreciated! :D I will investigate this one. When I saw the price of Verisign it about made my eyes pop out :'( . Those kind prices are really hard when you are just getting started and doing it out of pocket without a business loan. Thanks again all!
