Attribute sets

I've searched thru the forums and contributions for this, but havent found quite what I'm looking for, maybe I'm just using the wrong keywords. What I would like to do is when I add an attribute to a product, have the option of just choosing an item that already has a part number. Example. If there is a product such as a computer, and you normally sell power cords seperately for computers with the cord having its own category and part number. Instead of entering in all the info again, being able to choose from a dropdown list the part number that is already sold on the site. This would eliminate having to retype all the info over again, including the part number, description and having the option to charge the same price, or a new price. Presently, I see no way of tracking inventory of the attribute sales, and thus those items can become sold out without warning. Perhaps I am not setting an option somewhere.

Some sites have the attributes, with a hyperlink to open a new window to show you what exactly you are buying with the attribute. This helps to resolve confusion.

If there is a contribution for this, I would like to be pointed in the right direction.
