Parse Errors?

Hello,

Still very new at php and that sort, I've noticed that I get a few parse errors that I always have to get tech support to help me with. Fortunately, they fix it but unfortunately, they don't let me know how they did it. For example, if I get a parse error that says something like, unexpected '=' expected ')' in line 65. How can I fix that? I don't even know where line 65 is and I look around for anything that I might have changed but can't find what I might have changed. I certainly did not change any = or ). Are there any guidelines in fixing parse errors?

This normally happens when you have installed a contribution and you are accidentaly delete a "=" or similar in a file whe you edit it - Dreamweaver gives a great indication of the error - but if you don't have it or similar (using notepad?) the it may be a little difficult to diagnose

First, you have to look at the error message. There is a wealth of information and it tells you exactly what the issue is. If you had a specific example I could show you...but I'm not going to generate an error on purpose :)

The files that I was working with are below. The one specific line that I worked with is below along with the rest of the file towards the bottom of the page.

 

The only line that I had touched was the line where it says: (about the 27th line down)

 

<TD class=pageHeading><?php echo HEADING_TITLE; ?></TD>

 

All I did was stick the letter "r" between the E in the word TITLE and before the semicolon. I wanted to see if that "r" would show up on the osCommerce screen because on that screen it has "HEADING_TITLE" and I wanted to see if this was the line where I could remove those words. If the letter "r" showed up then I knew this would be the line for me to remove. But the letter "r" didn't show up and instead I got this parse error:

 

Parse error: parse error, unexpected '=', expecting ')' in /home/grevicci/public_html/osCommerce1/catalog/index.php on line 115

 

These are the files in their entirety under "index.php"

 

I sure would like to know how to fix this so that I can fix my future parse errors. Is this common for one to get parse errors when they make contributions to a line? I don't have any idea why it says that it is expecting a ')' because on that line I didn't even remove a ')' I only added an "r" and then removed it; and I don't know where one should put a ')' if there is one missing.

 

I sure would appreciate further advice. Thanks
