Vings
I've been asked by my clients to block a couple of IP addresses on of which is 207.46.98.138, as it visits the site a great deal, and, and effects the site stats. I have a feeling this may be a search spider (maybe msn) but Im not sure. I assume its not a good idea to block this if it is.. In which case how should I deal with it? many thanks
Dada1
Well first it isn't a good idea to post IP addys in case it is someones personal address. I just had a client sue a forum board for posting thier IP on thier boards and ending up gettting hacked and then a class action lawsuite was file by the companys customers. So I hope the mods will remove it.

Guest
as far as an ip address, if it is an ip address hitting a site and i dont want them there, or one 'hacking' i could care less if a class action. if youare not an attorney dealing with that stuff, heresay is bad to put into forums. Vings
So should I add this to the spiders.txt file?
bobg7
FYI, it's Microsoft, I would guess it's there MSN Spider. Installed Contributions: CCGV, Close Popup, Dynamic Meta Tags, Easy Populate, Froogle Data Feeder, Google Position, Infobox Header Entire Row, Live Support for OSC, PayPal Seal with CC images, Report_m Sales, Shop by Price Revised, SQL Updater, Who's Online Enhancement, Footer, GNA EP Assistant and still going. That formed a class action lawsuite against the site that posted the information. I think you misuderstood me when i said class action. I don't think you would like for your IP address posted would you?
Guest
well if cc info was exposed it was cuz the mis team didnt knwo what they were doing with having an open ip address. not the fault of the individual posting it, as ip address are available to be looked at from any computer, the mis is the group which blocks it. so doubt it would not get anywhere hmmmmmmm, well all my ip address are on the internet for a reason, i have a c block, can post that, wont hurt my feelings, i have firewalls and security measures in effect. Guest
So should I add this to the spiders.txt file? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Neil, Spiders.txt doesn't block spiders. It tells osCommerce not to give a session id (osCsid) to visitors who's user agent matches an entry in spiders.txt. If you want to block an IP address, you can do that in .htaccess. ed

Firewalls are not going to do much to hackers who really want to get through and have access to get through it. IP address is a key to your whole site and can do pretty much what ever they like with it. Courts found them gulity and made them pay out so obvisouly they were at fault. If you like to post your IP go ahead, give me 10 secs and I could have everything I need to crash your site and steal the identity of your customers if you would like to test your theory? Guest
sure go for it . . .my ip is publically available by doing a simple search one thing to note, you are acknowledging you are going to attempt to break the law and then who is at fault

Also I am reffering to the IP your domain resides. Not the IP of your of your internet connection.
