Why IPB (InvisionBoard) needs to be integrated!

In setting up my new store (I've been using OSC for 2-3 years now) I decided that I wanted to create a "community" atmosphere by adding forums, however, I didn't want my customers to have to create yet another login.

This was solved: I integrated my osc store with PHPBB, because I found a contrib that worked. If my customers go to the forum and click "Log In" then they are taken to the OSC login page. If the go to the forum and click "Register" then they are taken to the OSC new user page. When creating a new account, they are asked for their desired Forum username. It works great!

But there's a problem... PHPBB is limited.

I have been using IPB for years now and have kept up with their development. Anyone who uses it probably feels the way I do: there is no better board out there. It has many amazing features and incorperates forum, live chat, and now you can even allow your members to create their own blogs. With this integrated, customers would create one login to your store and have access to all these features, plus the many more they will create int he future.

This is what I want for my store/community! I want them to use the forums, create their own blogs, come back, enjoy themselves... and conveniently be able to shop right from my store. However... this can't be done using only PHPBB.

I think that there is a need for a true OSC > IPB integration contrib. There are several of us who need it and would use it, and I think we should band together and get it started. My knowledge of PHP is great, but too limited to create this contrib by myself.

Anyone else feel the same? Just looking for some feedback so that we can group up and get this started.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Priest

I recently deleted my invision board, and substituted the simplest PHP forum I could find- called miniBB.

Why? Because so many people emailed me with problems relating to the Invision interface- logins, disabled menues, too much stuff.

The templates are a royal pain in the butt the modify.

I've been posting on Craigslist.org forums, and I love their simple, simple, interface. That's what I want for starters.

Minibb is actually probably too simple- it's totally geeky from the admin side, to get to the admin page, you need to know the URL of the admin page, and several functions are on their own, separate pages as well. When you ask the team for a modification, they tell you why they don't think you should want it :)

On the other hand, the templates are straightforward, and registration is a breeze.

I would love to offer blogs to my community, i was thinking about stting that up. But I can't afford Invision's tech services and I don't think I can handle the tech issues myself.

psst... wanna buy a wand?

  • 2 weeks later...

If we could get this integrated the same way PHPBB is integrated, then the best part is that ALL features (Shop/Forums/Blog, etc) will have one and only one login.

I don't want to offer all of these to my customers who have to remember 3 different logins. They'd never use it then.

For now, I guess I will just stick to the OSC/PHPBB integration as it is working nicely. I just wish I could use InvisionBoard instead.
