Is using OSc a risk?

Recommended Posts

First, hello. This is my first post.

I discovered OSc through a live store. I really like what it seems to offer. I am considering using it myself. But I'm worried because of some of the bugs listed in the bug list (stuff like old orders becoming New again; Customer accounts getting mixed together, etc--these are very serious bugs!)

Another bug is one posted on the front page of the store I just went to. It said that if paying by PayPal, if the customer does not complete the "Return to Merchant" part, then the order isn't final. (Shouldn't be, because that return to merchant button is on the final page after the transaction is completed, therefore to the customer, the transaction is done. They should be able to close the window if that's what they want to do.)

So how safe and reliable is OSc?

how old is the list you are looking at? some of us have been running our businesses on this cart for years.... i'm sure there are bugs but nothing that can't be resolved through a little tweaking and help from this forum.

Looks pretty recent.

No software is without bugs, but the current version of osCommerce is quite stable. User contributions are another matter--you take your chances there.

Many of the so-called "bugs" that you see under discussion here are not related to the core code. In other words, anyone is perfectly free to install on a bad host, misconfigure their server, or mess up code that was previously stable... Cheers.

well, i have 2 comments... some of these seem related to the CVS version and not the stable release..... i also see a bunch of posts from people that don't seem to know what they are doing.

I experience none of these bugs in my cart.... I've been online for over 2 yrs and quite a busy site it is. I am sure a few other of the old timers will jump in and concur that if you integrate properly on a properly configured host, you should be fine.

don't you think if these were actual critical bugs that impacted everyone that there would be much more discussion about it in the forums?

the best thing for you to do would be to download it and install it and see for yourself!

The first point has to do with a link being published that included the session id. This should not be done intentionally and there are steps to take that will prevent search engine spiders from opening a session while crawling the site.

Using a third party credit card processor such as PayPal can pose this problem to many cart systems. But there is the PayPal IPN contribution that solves that problem (as I understand it, I don't use PayPal).

As for other "bugs" listed for the stable version, as has been said, many are not actually bugs, but rather user errors or alterations causing problems.

My osc store has been very stable for a year now and performed far better than the paid shopping cart systems I have used before.

Rule #2: Make sure there are no exceptions to Rule #1.

Thanks for the feedback. When I mentioned the bug list, I'm not so much concerned with the quantity (i understand bugs happen), but it's the bugs that are "deal breakers" that concern me. Anything that messes up a customer order is rather serious IMO.

Last night I installed 2.2. So far it was quite easy and I am impressed with the options and features (automatic dollar value updates is great!)

But let me share one problem I encountered as a customer, last night on www.ArcadeTees.com: I signed up using "EMAIL A". I paid via PayPal, but my primary PayPal address is "EMAIL B". This morning, I found a reply from ArcadeTees to "EMAIL A" saying "Thanks for your order, but now we need payment". And also an email to "EMAIL B" saying "Thanks for your payment, but we need to know what you ordered"!! I find this funny, but at the same time, it's a problem that would be very annoying with a store that has alot of sales.

Now, would you say the webmaster didn't implement the PayPal gateway correctly or it's a flaw in that Payment gateway? The system also didn't even charge me shipping (and one of his emails mentioned above, said he would have to add shipping since I was in Canada).

:-)

If I am pushing the "annoying newbie" boundary, let me know.... :P

Here's another one: Today I log in to my account on that same site, and I check My Account, under "My Order History" it says "You have not yet made any purchases." !! :o

And the item I bought last night is still in my cart!

Sounds like that site is not using the IPN contrib for PayPal and also is choosing to do international shipping by hand. And may also have some other issues resulting from their implementation. You may not be looking at the best example store.

You are welcome to browse my store and then back out instead of submitting the order confirmation page. Not that mine is the best, but it is running smoothly.

Sounds like the site owner doesn't know how to set up the paypal correctly. There are a whole bunch of people using osc and paypal that have solved the return/missing order problem.

Confusing the orders because of the email address entered in paypal also speaks of not being experienced.

I have been running or been involved with makeing sites using osc for about 5 years now and have never had a "bug" that couldn't be fixed before the site went live.

Yeah, this all relates to the other thread I've posted in, regarding "Is It Too Easy To Use OSc?"

The thing is, if the "built in PayPal" option is flawed, then it shouldn't be included. If there's a solution (the "PayPal IPN") then that solution should be rolled into the official OSc package, no?

But I jave to keep reminding myself, it's FREE.

there is a contribution for paypal ipn, if you look in the development section discussion, also in csv, that is what is going to be included in version 3. remember, search is your best friend. and reading is very much worthwhile
