cloned
Well, I have searched thru the documents and the forum, and havent seen anyone with my problem yet... here is the situation. I am helping someone set up a page for a business they want to start. They dont know anything about computers in general, and while I am but a small step above them, i got assigned the task. I set up a page using frontpage, but it was more involved than i had time for. Someone suggested I check out osCommerce, and i did.... installed it on a server, looked it over, seemed great.... I even Played around with editing some products, changed the logo, etc.... Here is the problem... I got called away to work for a week and now I cant remember how to get back to the admin page where i could change products, etc..... sure it asked me for a username & password or some such, but being the genius I am, i chose something on the fly that I 'should be able to remember' .... well, after a week of driving around the east coast, i didnt remember. Is there anything I can do short of deleting the whole thing and starting again? I can go to the site, and it functions, I just dont remember how to get the admin page back. It was there auto when I installed..... Thanks for any help.... cloned

Seems those people would build their own <shrug> anyway, thnx again for the reply cloned

Bijimmini
must be my question was beneath the rest of ya eh? thnx anyway.... very helpful folks.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I just had help installing OSC on the server, but now, I don't know how to get to the admin to manipulate the elements of the site. Is it done through HTTP through my browser, or through FTP? If you can help me with some info, I'd appreciate it greatly.

Guest
You can change some things from the Admin panel (browse to it), but don't use the built in File Manager! Most of the look and feel (well, really all of it) needs to be changed via the files. The stylesheet file is a good place to start. It controls colors, fonts etc. Then look at the images directory. Add images better suited to your product lines by overwriting the stock images. There are other ways but that's quick and easy. From there, it gets complicated. Look in the Knowledge Base for some beginning help.
FalseDawn
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Get an FTP client (WS_FTP, cuteftp etc), and use this to connect to your host - you will easily be able to see all the files comprising your website. Changing files is then a simple matter of downloading the file via FTP, editing in notepad (or the built in FTP editor), then re-uploading. It will also be immensely useful if you set up a local webserver on your PC to "mimic" the web host's environment - there are quite a few packages that include apache/mysql/php all bundled up, and will need minimal tweaking to get up and running. You don't _need_ a local webserver, but it makes making changes 10x faster when you can change a file on your pc, fire up the browser, point it to your local website and see pretty much immediately the effects of your changes. And you can _never_ have too many backups...
cloned
my problem isnt in editing the pages, i fully understand how to use an ftp client, dload the files, and re-upload to make the changes..... my problem is when I installed the osc, it poped up a choice to log on as admin and took me to the admin screen where I could add/delete products/categories, etc. Now I cant figure how to get back to that admin control panel........ no clue if I need to log on as a certain user from the main page, etc.... cloned
FalseDawn
Well, if you understand FTP, just look in the file list window to find out where the admin folder is... This is usually named "admin" by default, and just browse to www.yoursite.com/pathtoadmin/index.php in your browser.

It looks complete and simple from the way they describe it. i was thinking about downloading and trying it.
FalseDawn
Can't comment on that as I didn't use an all-in one because I needed specific versions of each to accurately mirror my host. Downloading each separately is more flexible and you'll learn a lot more about configuring them, but for the majority, an simple complete package will probably suffice.
