Manufacturer Drop-Down Issue

I was just noticing that, when a visitor selects a manufacturer from the manufacturer drop-down on the main page of my catalog, it takes them to the Advanced Search page and displays this error:

 

At least one of the fields in the search form must be entered.

 

Is that the normal behavior for that drop-down?

 

It seems like it should take you to a listing of all the products from that manufacturer.

 

I wondered if it might be because I removed the search box from the main page. However, restoring the search box does not change the behavior.

 

Is there a fix or modification that would make this work more intuitively?
