caspire
I am looking for a contribution that will turn the php files into html files so that I can name the html files like car_exhaust.htm so search engine spiders pick them up better. You can see an example of how this guy whos using oscommerce named his category files for search engine optimization. http://www.tunersports.com/engine-camshafts-c-21_150.html Is there any contribution that will do this? caspire
One more question about this contribution... I have a lot of people posting links to products on my website into forums...This is a big source of my web traffic. If after I install the Ultimate SEO URL contrib., and someone tries to access an old link (without SEO) to an item on my store, will it redirect them to the new link(with SEO)? Or will the old link that someone clicked on come up with a 404 Not found page? You get what I am asking?
Guest
There is an addon script that automatically redirects old parameter driven URLs to the new SEO URLs (using 301 header redirects). Even if you don't install the redirect script the old parameter driven URLs will still resolve properly. However, you lose the benefit of maintaining your page seniority with search engines. FalseDawn
The links will still work - the rewrite just maps the .html URL format to the corresponding dynamic php page with parameters (invisibly) Once you get indexed again, the .html pages will appear in the indexes. I'm not entirely sure what happens then, since the SE will effectively have "duplicate" links to exisitng identical pages... One reason why adding this contrib is always better _before_ you get indexed.
FalseDawn
Ahhh, yes - Bobby has cleared that up with the redirect script...
caspire
So if I install the SEO URL contrib and dont install the 301 header redirects, I will lose the benefit of maintaining my page seniority with search engines? Or are you saying if I install the SEO URL with the 301 I will lose seniority?

Guest
Just out of curiosity, I used to be on X-Cart (left it for very good reasons) and they have an interesting SEO function built into their product. They have a function that generates an entire catalog in html from the dynamic pages. It acts as the front end until the first time a customer uses the cart. Then they stay in the dynamic side through checkout. As I recall, the titles, metas, etc. were all SEO'd correctly. I wonder how this might compare in rank to a dynamic with proper SEO as generated by Bobby's Contrib. Might not help at all but it would be interesting to see. Guest
...there are issues with duplicate content with that type of system.
Guest
...meaning the engines will drop your rank because you're spider-spamming them? Or is it a functionality issue?
Guest
Well....both. A lot of people have misconceptions about what duplicate content actually is and what ramifications it will have on the page in question. When 2 (or more) pages are tagged as duplicate content the search engine will choose the one with the highest "trust" and push that one to the top whereas the others are pushed so far down they will never be found. It is NOT that the duplicate pages are removed from the index completely but merely pushed to the bottom. In the case of an existing store the pages with the most "trust" are the senior parameter driven URLs. If transitioning to static files these will be pushed to the bottom...thereby defeating the purpose of having SEO URLs to begin with. caspire
Do I still need to install 301 header redirects with the new version of SEO URL? Or does the new version include something like it?
