HELP! First Installation and I am stuck

Hello,

I would appreciate your help since I am stuck on the installation process. I have followed the preinstallation procedures step by step. I have uploaded to the root, set permissions, created a database and assigned a user etc.

And then I open my browser and point it to www.spieluhrdesign.com/catalog/install/ to continue the installation and I get a NO FOUNG message and "The requested URL http:// was not found on this server."

I have tried to configure my catalog/admin/includes/configure.php and my catalog/includes/configure.php with my info but since I am newbie I may have them wrong, Could you please take a look and maybe indicate what is wrong?

My domain name is www.spieluhrdesign.com

ROOT: /home/spieluhr/public_html

This is catalog/admin/includes/configure.php

When I clicked on www.spieluhrdesign.com I got a site is under construction page. Could it be that your host has not setup your account yet?

This would create the error message you received. Check with your host and ask them about this error.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply.

My web hosting account has been setup and my domain name is active. The underconstruction page is the default page by yahoo where I registered the domain...

I have uploaded oscommerce to the host and I am at the stage that I need to run the installation from my browser and there is where I get the error message.

Any suggestions??

Thx!

The default under construction page is generally called index.html, which is first on the list to be shown in a webbrowser. Delete index.html (or rename it if you prefer). Now the webbrowser should load your index.php, if your host does not have special requirements. Some hosts require you have an index.html.

Thanks, but my problem is that I cannot install Oscommerce!

I have uploaded to the the server and I am trying to continue the installation by pointing to www.spieluhrdesign.com/catalog/install/ and I get the NO FOUND message!

Hi, I don't think yahoo geocities support PHP pages.

Hmm, a workaround would be to install osCommerce on your local computer and than upload the files to your host, while maintaining the directory structure.

Could it be that I uploaded the catalog via ftp but I had set it to binary???

That would be a problem as uploading in ascii is required for php files, but i think you should than see another error message, i.e. not "The requested URL http:// was not found on this server." The error message you are getting now, suggests the browser cannot find the file in the place you are looking.

My suggestion would to check with your host exactly in which directory you should upload the php files, than do a trial upload with a simple php file like this one:

<html>
<body>
<?php
   echo 'Hello World';
?>
</body>
</html>

and check if you can load this in your browser.

If all work fine, than try again installing osc, or use the workaroud i suggested earlier.

Well, i just checked your url. When i browse to http://www.spieluhrdesign.com/catalog/install/index.php i can see the osc installation file...

Hello all!

Thanks for your replies!

The problem was that I hadnt changed the DNS nameserver of my domain with the DNS that my host had gave me... That must be a pretty dumb to miss I supposed but I am the rookiest of all :)

Anyway, I finally got it installed !!!

Now, when I point my browser to www.spieluhrdesign.com the shop doesnt appear. It only appears when I enter www.spiluhrdesign.com/catalog/index.php. How can I get it to open just by entering www.spieluhrdesign.com?

THANKS!!

That's because you didn't install osc in your root, but in root/catalog instead. You can solve this with these steps:

1. move the whole osc file/directory structure to your root, i.e. from /home/spieluhr/public_html/catalog to /home/spieluhr/public_html

2. change both your configuration files to match the new path info
