The two downloads are identical in terms of what they contain, only the method of extracting them is different e.g. zip or tar - so download the zip file.

To install it you either need to set up your own computer as a web server (for testing only), or upload the 'catalog' folder to hosting you have purchased.

If you have some knowledge of html you should be okay, but you will need to be prepared to learn the basics of php and mysql as you go along.

To set up your computer as a web server, go to http://www.apachefriends.org/en and download the all-in-one XAMPP package and install on your computer. It contains everything you need and is the easiest I have come across to install.

Personally I think it is best to install a local web server on your own computer (intranet), and to test the site out before you upload any files you edit. You can see if your changes work, and if they don't work then restore the old files and try again.

You'll be able to play around with osCommerce as much as you like while you learn how to use it, and you won't mess up an online website.
