Taxes

I've searched many threads about this topic and I hope this doesn't go into lala land. I am setting up a store in the US operating from one state. However, I only wish to sell and ship within the US (for logistical reasons). Anyway, I'm trying to set up the tax info properly and it's driving me crazy. I think I'm supposed to only charge tax for orders made from my state? For example, I live in Alabama. I have 4 "test" accounts set up. Only 1 account is an alabama resident. The rest are in other states within the US. Anyway, I only have one tax zone set up (Alabama), using the default "taxable goods" tax class, and my only tax rate is set up as 4% for Alabama with a priority 1. The tax is calculated properly for anyone living in the state of alabama. However, lets say someone from Vermont makes an oreder, there is no tax (even if it's 0) info displayed. I guess my question is 2 part. Should I charge tax (Alabama 4%) for every user no matter what state they live in or should I charge (Alabama 4%) tax only for people who live in the state? Thanks for the great system and I'm looking forward for some conversation or a link.

You should contact your State Department in charge of collecting Sales tax and find out, but I think unless you have retail outlets, like Barnes and Noble in every State you do not collect sales tax for other States.

So the taxes would only apply to users that live in my state? Thanks so much for the information. :D

I am in Alabama and I only charge taxes to people who live here.

Ok, because I am going through the same thing for a friend's site I am setting up. She lives in Arizona. She contacted the county about it and she is ONLY supposed to be collecting tax from people in her city, NOT the whole state or the rest of the US. Anyone know what to do about that? Right now, I can't even find where to set it to just tax Arizona residents, let alone just one town.

Everything she is selling is taxable items.

Anything would be appreciated!
