BrainK
Hi, Please if anyone can help me preferably privately to set up the two files .htaccess and .htpasswd Im so worn out from trying this all day long (10hrs!). I was working on my store until I saw on the site here how the admin panel is not secured so I immediately realized I needed to get this done before I continued to work on my store but I didnt think it would cause so much heartache. Ive tried every thing. I have a feeling its probably how the server is written out but Im pretty sure Ive had it correct. I dont know tho ;( Ive given it my absolute best shot but am out of options. If any one would be so kind as to help me privately to set the up the two files. Ive read all the tutorials and posts here but I dont think it would be solved with just posting the htaccess info here. My host is godaddy.com and the only help they offered was in this email that said: If you feel comfortable doing so, you can create an .htaccess file to password protect a directory in your Linux hosting account. We cannot provide instructions or troubleshooting for this, but we can tell you that the tutorials and password generators can be found at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/howto/htaccess.html and your full server path is /home/content/u/s/e/username/html, where 'u', 's', and 'e' are replaced by the first three letters of your hosting username, and 'username' is replaced by your username. Please let us know if we can help you in any other way. They dont have a password protect feature on there own either & the information they gave didnt get the htaccess to work. I do get the log in screen sometimes but the password never works. This could probably take someone whos familiar with this a few min compared to my 10 hour attempt. So please if anyone can help let me know, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Praying we can get it to work. Thanks Dan.
BrainK
If anyone else can contact me if they think they can help in case Dan is busy and cant get back in contact with me. I should be up a bit longer tonight but I am starting to get sleepy. I was thinking instant messaging on an instant messenger is best way to communicate to get this to work. BrainK
sounds like u need to change hosts to where you have a cpanel to do all of this <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If I had known beforehand, kinda not an option for me financially atm. According to everything I read cpanel isnt needed and the two files can be done manually. Ive used ftp to access and upload my folders.

Guest
htaccess and htpasswd are a web server function, if you go to apache.org you can probably search thru the documentation on the proper setup.

I dont think Im missing anything. Apache is built into the php webhosting as far as I understand. However I just cannot say for certain since all the little details of servers and such arent exactly my forte. Ive read on posts here it was a simple matter of these two files, the coding and uploading and my admin folder for the oscommerce would be secure. I didnt see that program and I did do a lot of searching on the internet about this topic. I think you were one the people whom I came across on these forums who talked about htacess a lot, I remember because of your icon :) I sure hope in the future oscommerce changes the security of the admin panel somehow. Oscommerce is so wonderful, this one little thing is so important though, because how can you work with the software without that peace of mind. Gonna hit the hay for tonight guys, I was looking forward to becoming a member of the forums before I came across this problem. I think these forums are great and I look forward to participating. Hope tomorrow will be more productive then today and I can get this fixed.
