Guest Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 I am trying to set up a Internet Merchant Account with my bank in Portugal. However they dont really seem to know what I am talking about. I am not sure exactly either. If someone can describe the main features of a merchant account then i can perhaps describe to them more specificaly what i need? Any help will be very much appreciated as i have just lost the ability to use Paypal and cannot take any orders at the moment. Cheers Mike
Guest Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 I'm assuming your bank at least knows what a merchant account is? You have to have a merchant account to be able to accept CC payments yourself. If you want to process transactions real-time on the Internet, you'll need a merchant account that's been established for use on the Internet. There's a difference between a merchant account for a brick-and-mortar store and an e-store. You need to have an account(s) that have been established for Internet use or you won't be able to process transactions in real-time. Depending upon the bank you obtain your merchant account(s) through, they may ask for a security deposit for an Internet merchant account as there's a higher risk involved relating to fraud. Why aren't you able to use PayPal anymore? ~James
Guest Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 I cant use Paypal anymore because i sell tobacco products. After 7 months i came home the other night to an email saying i couldnt use them anymore. So for the moment I am shut down. Gonna look at pppay and nochex to tide me over for a bit hopefully. But want to get a proper checkout set up. Thanks for the info. Mike

Cheers Mike <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just explain to them that you need to be able to accept credit cards online. If at that point they don't know how to help you with it, then you need to choose a different bank for your business. Some smaller banks and credit unions don't provide merchant services. But if you go to a larger bank, they almost certainly do. Rule #1: Without exception, backup your database and files before making any changes to your files or database. Rule #2: Make sure there are no exceptions to Rule #1.
Guest Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 If I was you, I would intergrate oscommerce with pppay and take payments that way. This way you would not need a merchant account of your own. pppay.com operates to poirtugal.
