Vesper
I need to obtain a business license in order to be able to hook up with certain manufacturers. Is there any information I should know before purchasing one, and do I have any "cheap" alternatives, right now it looks like I'm going to have to pay almost $400 (Connecticut). If there isn't any way to lower this cost, does anyone have any suggestions for earning some quick money :D

In Canada we can get a vendor permit for free which is all that's needed by manufacturers/wholesalers/etc. We only have to pay if we want to register a business name if we want to operate under a name other than our own. That only costs $60-80 even. Glad I'm not in the US. :P ~James
MattGeri
Hi, Anybody on this forum know anything about an international reseller license? Im from Ireland and I want to use a drop shipper. All the good ones require a reseller license. I am clueless on how to obtain an "international" license. Any help is appreciated. - Matt
Wendy James
Majiks I think the cost depends on the type of business and where you are. It's like $40 here or around that in Bama for a general liscense. No idea about international liscenses, sorry. Wendy James Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Guest
For retail, at least, I don't believe you need any "international" license to sell to international customers. -jared

In VA it's free to obtain a business license and zoning permits, while websites charge $300+ for the same thing you can do in a few hours.
dswofford
Yes its a normal fee if your talking about incorporation... which i suggest if you want to protect yourself from liability. otherwise if you are liable for something and someone sues you they can get your house... car.. etc.. with incorp. papers they can only get the businesses property. you can check out LLP (limited liability partnership). etc.... Guest
It costs $7 here in missouri. I'd recommend doing a search for "Conneticut Department of Revenue" and you should find your state's information regarding what they require to obtain a business license. stashandstuff
Free in Illinois if you are a sole proprietor, otherwise there is a fee for registering an assumed name ($50) plus the cost of publishing the notices.
seksaini
sole proprietorships and partnerships business license cost about $32 a year to start in California and $0 for the seller permit. But Limited Liability Company (LLC) in CA will be subjected to $800 franchise tax even if you made no money. ;)

RedLineCustoms
For those of you that don't know how to obtain a business license, it is actually simple. Most of our state governments have online applications that cost around $10.00. Before you register ANYTHING, try to figure out a few things. For example, what type of business are you going to start? Would it be wise to possibly register not only the name, but also as ", Inc." There are many options out there, do some research! www.Google.com! Best search engine in the world :) Do *NOT* use those Online companies that register your name for you, they rip you off, badly. They make a huge profit off of us when it honestly takes only a few minutes to fully register your business. Make sure you look into what is what, be educated. For example, if you are going to deal with product that could potentially blow something up, register your business as Incorporated! You don't want some family placing a law-suit on you and taking your cars and your house! There is also LLC (Limited Liability Corp) which is growing in popularity. The bottem line here is DO RESEARCH. I can't stress that enough! If you whip a business up in less than a week, you are bound to failure. Not saying you will 100% deffinately fail, but you probably will. "Failing to plan is planning to fail" <- good quote for us business owners. Also, just a forewarning ... ALL STATES ARE DIFFERENT. They ALL have different laws and regulations. Be *SURE* to read up on them! You don't want to have a successful business running only to have it taken away by our government! They have done it, and they will do it again. If any of you need help, feel free to PM/E-Mail me. I'll most likely be sitting at this computer working on my own project that is taking a very long time! (2 Months and counting) Regards, Steven P. Red Line Customs Kindest Regards, Steven P. If there isn't any way to lower this cost, does anyone have any suggestions for earning some quick money :D $400, thats crazy. I paid $35 for mine here in GA. If I were you, I would incorperate in a different state that does not charge income taxes and purchase a business license from there. You will end up paying about the same amount of money, but you could select a state without any state taxes and not have to pay them for your business, plus you would have the added protection of being incorperated. After all, what can Conn. say if your business is based out of state and you sell online.
Guest
In Suffolk County, NY it costs $30 to get a "Doing Business As" or DBA Name. This is all you really need unless your full name is in the business name. then you can run your business, but it is like an alias.
