Narrow search results based on search results

I am in desperate need of assistance. I have a client who wants to have 2 different ways to narrow search results from search results... User clicks on category then sub category, on this page of listings in the "sub" I need to give the user to search the results for Gauge or Length. The products in the store are electrical cords, that the user simply gets a quote for. But I need to narrow the results from a search in 2 ways from the search results page or sub-category list page.

 

 

I have tried all the search info box type contribs. I have also modified the default search box for descriptions. But what I need has to work only inside of the current category.
