Too many items? Slow site...

At what point can too many items start to slow down an osCommerce site?  I recently added a few thousand items via EP and now my site runs VERY slow.

Thanks!

a few thousand items is very probably NOT the cause - I have read of sites here with MANY thousands of products that function normally - Look elsewhere for the slow down. - start with your host

I checked with my host and of course they say it's not them. Any other ideas? Anything I can check to see if it really is the host?

Thanks! I do pull images from other sites, but wouldn't that only affect the image on each page as I pull the page?

When you say, MANY thousands, how many are you referring to? 3,000, 5,000, 10,000...?

Thanks again!

I ran the output queries contribution a couple times and got this result:

Current Parse Time: 5.297 s with 410 queries

Current Parse Time: 4.387 s with 414 queries

Is that good/bad? I have over 10,000 items in 176 categories (17 main cats and many sub-cats).

I think maybe it is spending a lot of time figuring out product to category relationships... I can copy and paste the full results if that helps detemine my problem.

Thanks!

Hi:

Search for posts by Chemo--he's offered a lot of tips on optimization--but I guess you're already using his Queries Debug Output. :) Here's a recent one:

BTW, I noticed your reference to hotlinking ("I do pull images from other sites...")--if that's what you're doing, not a cool practice. <_<

Thanks. I checked that forum already but nobody else had nearly as many queries as I did (so i'm assuming that's my problem).

Regarding the other images, they are from an affiliate site so I'm allowed/supposed to pull from them.

Thanks again!

Good enough then. Guess I'm a little touchy from unauthorized leeching of our graphics. :o

But what happens if the affiliate server has problems? At least if you put the graphics on your server, you're self-reliant... Oh well, that's another topic.
