I have many listings (over 1000) for several products on various search engines. The problem however is, that many of our listings are for our privacy.php, conditions.php, and so on and so on. They are not to actual categories or products.

I have gone to many website by clicking on links, and have noticed that the more 'professional' looking websites , no matter what link you click on - redirects you back to the main page.

As a mod rewrite rule would be foolish, because this would also send search engine spiders back to the index page, which will probably kill that listing - what is the next best thing?

I have read many times that SEs do not like java and ignore it. That said - if I put a java redirection in to send the users back to the main page, is this going to still allow spiders to crawl our and revist that link while allowing customers to see our actual store. I'm not trying a blackhat technique here. I just want peoples first view of our page to be our main page, not our shipping and returns pages LOL!

Does anyone know how I would include such redirection or is there a system already invented in the contributions area?

I would think this has probably already been addressed as noone wants people coming into their shipping and returns pages. I am guessing the reason they end up there first is because it is consider GOOD content as opposed to the normal store look.

So how do the big sites do this? Java, Mod Rewrite, ??? Also DOES mod rewrite kill the SE spiders ability to revist that link if there is a redirect? From what I understand they follow modrewrites and penalize.

Please help - I want to be able to have the same functionality of the big sites too.

Hi BeachnGrub

A few thoughts

You say you have over 1000 listings - so you must have been "on Air" for a while - The fact that some of these are going to pages you don't want - is not a bad thing - just inconvenient. People will still find you and that is what you want :D

Lets address some of your issues more closely

Have you got an all products lisiting for your site ? - there are contribs a plenty for this and the spiders will crawl, all over them lisitng your products as you have described them when you create them - thereby leading people to product pages.

Another technique I use is this - i did not, by design, instal the cart in root - what that did was it left me an index page that I could manipulate outside the cart for things such as reciprocal linking, and content page development - let me explain

On my home page (outside the cart) _ I have created a reciprocal link directory to which I pursue an active and restrictive linking strategy - The robots love this if you do it well and if you make the link you are sending out for your site your cart index page - then bingo people will come to your preferred page.

In addition to the above I have used a commercial package to develop over 3000 pages of content that relate to my business AND products. The robots crawl over and list these 3000+ pages and as my preferred link back is inserted in the pages - again bingo visitors are directed to where I want them.

These are a few ways you can direct people to pages you want without using re-directs and other blackhat techniques as you rightly point out.
