Moving OS Commerce

Recommended Posts

First, I apologize is this is posted elsewhere but I couldn't find any posts relating to this.

I have a client who is not happy at all with his current website desinger & hosting company.

He is using OSCommerce on his current site and wants everything moved to my servers - however he knows for a fact the current host will not give him access to move it.

Is there a way to copy over everything to my servers without the hosting username/password (he does have the OS Commerce admin username/password, just not the hosting ones.)

Thanks for your assistance on this as my client really wants to move.

Forgive me if I misunderstand the question - but all he needs to do is backup his site and database and load them on your server - There will be some fiddling to do no doubt - but how can a host hold him hostage - I don't understand ?

First, be sure it's really his website. He should have been given the hosting username/password when he opened the account or bought the site from the person(s) who opened the account.

Second, you can view (and therefore copy) the files through the osCommerce file manager, though it will take quite a while that way since you'll have to do one file at a time. That won't get you the images, but you can R-click to download those anyway if you really have to.

There is always a way. It's not always easy, but there is always _some_ way to do it.

Thanks both for your assistance - I am not that familiar with OS Commerce so hence my question -

I just installed a copy so now I can see how to back it up and "work" on it from there -

jcall --- many many many people do not know their hosting accounts usernames/passwords - it is actually not a common thing for people to know who have websites created & hosted in a package. Most business customers just want their site up, e-mail working and don't care how it works.

Yes, this site does belong to him and as stated before he has access to the OS Commerce username/password.

I will play the R click game (unfortunately) and go from there - unfortunately he has hundreds of items for sale but he does get 17,000 visits per month so what can I say?

Thanks again

Ahhh. Didn't think about that.

You might want to look into one of these site crawler/copier/downloader/dredger/whatever tools that are intended to download an entire website to your hard drive. I believe that they'd get all the images for you. Less work than the R-click route.

There is a difference between not having the information and not being able to get it. If he has a hosting account and is current then he should be able to get that info. He does not even need to tell them he is planning on moving the site only the he is going to make some modifications or have someone make some for him if he thinks that they will have a fit if he tries to move it.

The only reason they can really refuse him the info is if he has some kind of lease arrangment going instead of actually owning the store. Some companies are doing that where they lease a turnkey store and take care of everything.

Also does he have control of the domain name? Something to doublecheck .

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??
