No Cpanel and only ftp?

I am trying to implement a site on a Sun Cobalt Raq4. I did not do the initial install I am only trying to customise it. The webhost say that there is no Cpanel and there does not seem to be anything else. He told me to just ftp in and while I can do that to access the code how do I do other things like setup email addresses, setup users and do database stuff? Is there some other software that I can download or tell him to instal? :'(

Who cares if it's a Sun Cobalt Raq4. The host was probably trying to impress you. I'd find another host.

You could use PuTTY (Telnet/SSH client)--very useful, but it's a command line interface... If you're not used to that, it's true--getting another host with cPanel will make life a lot easier.

I don't have a choice about host. It is not my site, it is a clients.

 

I was thinking he meant when he said what type of server he had that CPanel could not run on it?

 

I know another host I access does not have CPanel either but they have some other software called H-Sphere I think

 

I was thinking of getting him to at least instal phpmyadmin.

If you just want something to help admin the database, get the host to install phpMyAdmin. It is free and very easy to use.

 

Between that and FTP you can manage osCommerce. To otherwise manage the server (setup email, etc.) you could get the host to install WebMin, also free and according to its site, can run on Cobalts.

Don't forget to secure phpMyAdmin directory as well.

Go to the MySQL website. You can download an application that will do all the myphpadmin type stuff from a application rather than through a web page.
