osCommerce

The e-commerce.

2 stores, 1 database

Can osCommerce be setup twice on the same database. I know a lot of CMSs allow this by adding a prefix to the database names. If I did this with osCommerce would it still work? Anybody done this? Also is there a contribution for buying something that you would download, like software? The customer would purchase the product then be sent to a download link that would be active for like a month or something. I searched the contributions but did not find anything.

you can modify the database tables to add prefix's to the tables and still use the same database. read thru the contribution and you can modify it for your needs.

You could also use a different set of files and a different database. That's what I do. Do you really *need* to have them run in the same database? If you are with a webhost that only allows 1 database, find a better webhost. Webhosts that offer multiple databases are a dime a dozen.

Thanks Mibble I will give it a try on my local computer and see how it goes. Read through the contribution, do you mean the files included with osCommerce or the knowledge base?

jcall I have been with one of these "dime a dozen" webhosts and I would rather jump in a barrel of razor blades then go to a cheap provider. My current provider is a little more expensive but they are extremely helpful and the server response is top notch.

I want to do this too but just because I want to have more than one demo shop running over the same database to make life easier. So I just want to sell the same thing from the same database. Do I have to do anything so complicated as mulitple stores?

Joe, if you're webhost is worth their salt, then they'll offer you more than one database. Yes, you can run multiple stores from the same database, but it only makes sense IMO if you're selling the same product from the same inventory.

Other than that, the only other real reason to run in one database, is that you save the 1 minute required to create a new db/user/pass, plus a slight CPU overhead.

I'm just saying that before you go through the hassle, make sure it's worth it. :)
