I have many English content pages that I need to get tranlated and inserted into Chinese - the defines()... What are the steps onvolved to create Chinese equilivents? What programs do people use? Help I installed the big5 contribution of Mr. Chengs, but I have many pages that are not part of the distribution.

You can start by copying all the files in includes/languages/english that don't already exist in your includes/languages/tchinese to the latter folder. What you do next will depend on the source of your Chinese text...if it is in a Word file, save the file as Encoded Text (*.txt), and select Big5. Then open the file in a text editor (not Word). What you want is text that looks like garbage (not recognizable Chinese characters, boxes, or question marks):

Then go through your includes/languages/tchinese files define by define, replacing the English strings with the equivalent encoded Chinese strings... Not a lot of fun.

 

So your Chinese language files will look like this:

 

define('NAVBAR_TITLE', '?ڪ??b??');

 

You also might want to make sure php was configured with mbstring. (You can check that in osCommerce admin under Server Info...) It should show something like this...

Japanese support enabled

Is that what you're asking?

 

Most of our operation is Taiwan-based, and we haven't even translated a lot of strings to Chinese yet. It's hard to keep up with, hen wei. We've got more translated to Japanese than Chinese... :blush:

Is it as simple as 'NAVBAR_TITLE', 'charset=big5'?

Nice to see that there'll be a complete Chinese version soon (?).

Are you focussing on Traditional Chinese? Are there any efforts towards a version in Simplified Chinese?

Please, please, do NOT use Big5, GB2312, HZ or-what-ever encoding! Simply use UTF-8 (Unicode) for everything (not only Chinese), and it'll work fine on any modern browser. The advantage: The text will NEVER look like garbage, even not in Window's ?Notepad?.
