Lee4029
I am new to OS and am having a problem figuring out how to backup my files. When I go to the Database Backup link I get a red bar at the top that says ( Error: Backup directory is not writeable). Can anyone explain how I can get a backup? Thanks in advance. Could you go into a little more detail as to what I need to do. Hate to sound like a pain, but I am very new to this. Thank You.
ArtRat
2,290,000 googled pages for "how to chmod" this will at least get you to understand what it is some webhosts have admin side cmod control some ftp programs allow cmod all depends on what you use and have. I can access the backend of my site, add and change products, and make modifications. Guess I thought this would be as simple.
♥Vger
Either: Go to your web hosting control panel and look for a File Manager - this may allow you to set the permissions for the folder that way. If not .... FTP to your website, right-click and select Operations --> FTP Commands --> CHMOD and set them that way (this is for WS FTP Pro although other FTP programmes are similar) Vger

I go into file manager. I then click on the admin folder. From there I can see my backups folder. How do I know if I can set the permissions? Also if this does not work how would you reccommend I FTP the site? Much Thanks again.
♥Vger
The 'File Manager' you need to use is in your Web Hosting control panel - don't confuse this with the osCommerce 'admin' control panel File Manager. In your Web Hosting control panel you should see the options to reset the permissions when using the File Manager. If you don't have an FTP programme then I suggest you download the 30 day trial version of WS FTP Pro and install it. To connect to your website you'll need your host id - usually something like ftp.yourdomain.com, and your User Name (usually the same as for your web hosting control panel access), and your password. Then you navigate to the file using the info I supplied above. Vger

I have my host id, user name and password. I downloaded both the WS FTP Pro and a program called Smart FTP. Both of these I am unfamiliar with. I imputed the info to the WS FTP Pro but am not sure what I am looking at. It does not appear to be my site files. Any direction?
♥Vger
If you set up a 'connection' using WS FTP Pro and clicked the 'Connect' button and made a successful connection to the domains files then you've made a good start. When you get to your site via FTP you may not immediately be seeing the folder that your websites files are kept in. Look for a folder called e.g. html or htdocs, or look for a link to that folder e.g. mainwebsite_html Vger
