Search Engine Optimization - Analysis & Tools

I think you did an excellent job on that report. However, there are a few points that need to be mentioned.

Your section on meta tags is ambiguous (maybe I am reading the information incorrectly) as well as incorrect, IMO. You state that they are dead but then say that all major SE's use the description. They can't both be true. Also, google only uses the meta description as it sees fit and, in fact, usually does not. It generates the description from text on the page. Some of that may or may not be from the meta description, per its mood at the time. You say not to fuss about them since they are not that important (a) and then say to use them (d) . In google's case I would agree but in the case of others, this is incorrect. You say to use 100 words for keywords. This is way too high. Given that each page should be optimized for 2-3 keywords, adding another 97 words will dilute the keyword density. You say to change the meta description since the SE's look for change. While this is true that they do, they look for it more in the page content. If someone is going to take the time to change text, it should be on the page.

For image alt text, image links should also have title tags.

If it is permitted by oyur company, you should add this as a contribution. The link you gave will be lost over time but as a contribuiton others can always find it.

Good job Dan, regardless of what the child stated as a message on the contribution page. If you contact a team member, they will remvoe that comment. It has no business being there.

IMO, this is not a contribution.

Of course it's annoying when someone posts a comment to the contributions area, but he/she is 100% correct.

This is a tip/trick and is best placed as a post in the tip/trick Forum Channel.

It's a .pdf document - where's the GPL license, where's the "Open Source" etc etc.

I agree that it isn't a contribution in that sense however there are several others that are just documentation like this. I thought it better to put it there because, a year from now, when someone searches for SEO help on the forums, they will get a lot of results and this one will be way towards the end. No one will likely ever see it. With it in contributions, there is more of a chance in finding it. Now, if there were a forum for just SEO as suggested before...

I agree with Jack as I will be taking of the pdf from the other site. That is why I placed it in the other section. It will be there permanently. As he mentioned, we dont have SEO forum, so its up to my discretion where i put it.

Second of all, This was my research for one week and it was an honor to share that to a very helpful community here at osc. If someone seems it shouldnt be here or there, they shouldnt be bragging abt it.

Unfortunately it isn't up to your discretion at all. It shouldn't (in my opinion) be in the contribution area, further it pushes a product that is not Open Source.

I say "thanks for sharing", but I expect it will be removed (from the contribution area) as it is not released under the GPL. Put up a GPL with it and share the source code (eg the original word document) and it could be condidered a contribution I guess.

It looks like a contribution to me, regardless of the missing documentation. It's helpful information. I have been struggling with SEO issues for three years.

Please somebody, remove the crap-ass, trollish, infantile comment.

Hi Dan,

I think you have done a great job. This is very interesting and I personally got this thru the contribution and then directed to this forum. I believe it does right thing being there as when we are looking for SEO, we are looking for every resource that is there in the OSCommerce. It includes contrib and above it how to use them effectively.

thanks for sharing wonderful resource freely to the community.
