Simplyeasier
My Webpage I'm still learning alot about osCommerce and could use some pointers. Thanks for your input. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi Awol This is the thinking pattern I would employ if i were in your shoes. What makes my site stand out from the crowd ? You are in an exceptionally competitive market. (aren't we all tho) so you really need to give your visitors something to hold onto within 3 - 5 seconds (thats right seconds not minutes) of their initial contact with your site. At the moment you have not customised your site to any extent - make that a priority - make the site visually interesting whilst retaining a professional look that does not slow load times. That may sound like a tall order but here is a starting place - I URGE you to surf for at least one full morning - a day is better and visit nothing but computer sites. Take down detailed notes of what you LIKE and importantly what you DISLIKE about the sites. Then sit down and let your mind sift thro the designs you have seen - gradually you will start to get a feel for where you want to pitch your own site. Once you have this idea put it together in writing so you have a road map to refer to whilst developing your site. Once you stand out from the crowd - I will be happy to comment further hth Charles A kite flies highest AGAINST the wind ! "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, a lover in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO!! What a ride!"
MarcS
Hi I agree with Charles. A good start would be to look at all the sites posted on this board. They are all made with oscommerce, so you will be able to see what others are doing with the program. When I am working. I have two folders on my hard drive. One called "work in progress" and the other called "Emergency mess repair". I select a file to work on and make a copy in the second folder. I then make a copy in the "work in progress" folder and edit it by changing things and then viewing my changes. Nine times out of ten, the change does not work and I have to undo my change. If I mess up the file beyond repair, "I have an untouched copy in "Emergency mess repair".This is a trial and error method, but after a while you will get the hang of it. 1. Start by removing the boxes you do not need. eg The language box. 2. Then work on an original header. 3. Then progress to creating an interesting and original home page. That is what gets the attention of browsers. This is not a boast. But I am working on my first site and have been at it for a month. I was proud of my first effort and it was slated. I persevered and eventually anything is possible with a great program like oscommerce. Good luck Mark http://82.112.102.87/ (site in progress)
