Out of stock item not showing up

i want my out of stock products to show up even though thier out of stock. i have my configuration-->stock setup like this:

 

Check stock level true

Subtract stock true

Allow Checkout false

Mark product out of stock Out of Stock

Stock Re-order level 5

 

but when i go to test it out by marking a product out of stock and then checking to see if if its showing up in the catalog...its not! am i missing an option somewhere?

How do you mark a product out of stock ?

I am doing the same because I wanted to show a special image 'sold' for a short while and it should work simply by editing your product and setting quantity to zero while forcing it visible by clicking the green dot.

thanks cam. ill give that contribution a try.

im new to oscommerce but the way i mark a product out of stock is to find the product in admin and clink on the "Out of Stock" radio button.
