I have used Zoomify product to try to achieve a similar thing. www.zoomify.com - My site is not live yet. They have a free offering (with their banner) and it is possible to purchase various components. I have bought the basic version. There is also another group - however, a little expensive ($79 per month) check out - http://www.afarsitebetter.com/realZOOM/. If I could afford this I would have this.
