walkman Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I'm trying to get a handle on the Osc world. It's amazing, especially since it's my first investigation into the open source world. I found the development workboard entries and I'm trying to understand if it's complete and up to date ... and what it means. If I look at it, I see 12 entries for Milestone 2 divided between the 2 developers Mr. Evans, and Mr. Ponce de Leon. Mr. Evans has completed 4 tasks and has one "in progress". Mr. Ponce de Leon has 5 tasks listed as "in progress" and 1 task listed as "open". There is 1 unassigned task. Is this list complete and up to date? Does it mean what I think it means ... especially since the critical develoment resource also has lots of other responsibilities for the project?
dwatson Posted January 30, 2005 Posted January 30, 2005 As another newbie, here is my outlook on that issue: osCommerce is working as the stable release stands now. The proof is the number of sites using it successfully. Then it can provide a platform for further development if you know PHP/MySQL. Moreover, it looks like there are a lot of really good contributions that can soup it up. Building your own e-commerce site (unless you really expect Amazon's traffic) from scratch seems like re-inventing the wheel, and osCommerce looks pretty efficient and usable. So, if they handle it with a close cadre of core developers, that seems to be just the way it is. And having worked with close cadres of core developers, there are certainly many worthy advantages to that approach. Other OS projects work differently, but I am taking this for what it is. And it seems to be good. Thanks, David Watson
