tep_date_short

Good morning! I'm trying to change tep_date_short to output '1/27/2005' instead of '01/27/2005'. So in other words, I just want to display the month, with no leading '0'. I've tried modifying general.php (includes/functions/general.php) at about line 570, but to no avail. I know the problem is literally in front of me, but I just can't seem to figure it out. I know it calls DATE_FORMAT from english.php (includes/languages/english.php), but that shoudn't have anything to do with '01' appearing. Any suggestions.
