Destination not writeable?

My last problem appears to be how to get images to show. I have the images I want to display residing in a directory outside the store, but osCommerce appears to insist I have them in the /catalog/images directory. I've tried that, too, but the message I see is this:

Error Error: Destination not writeable.

Error Error: Catalog images directory is not writeable: /home/mywebsite/public_html/catalog/images/

I've been unable to CHMOD that directory through SmartFTP, but my site's control panel will let me do it. Still, images don't show.

Is there a tutorial somewhere on this, or am I just missing the point?

I'm guessing that although your site's control panel 'appears' to be resetting the permissions that it's not actually doing so. Contact your hosting company, tell them the problem, and get them to reset the permission on that folder for you. It should be set to 755 or 777. As you'll be getting your hosting company to do it for you I'd go for 777 straight off.
