Help cart not updating properly with custom code

Hello,

 

I have written some code thats based off of the option_type_feature_v1.71. I have the code working great, however if you try to add something "custom text field" with a value starting out with numbers, when you update the quantity in the cart, the attribute disappears. The values are still contained within the database(customers_basket_attributes) but not showing up in the cart.

 

Does anyone know why the cart would work with values not starting in numbers, and not work with the values start with numbers? Please help as this is making me insane.
