Column Width Problem

im in the process of building a site using os commerce. i am using both right and left columns in my design. i have them both set to 125px. i also have all of the tables set to 770 or 780 so that they are optimizedfor 600x800 screen resolution. when i view my site with firefox v. 1.0pr the left column does not stay at 125 px. therefore the page does not all fit on the screen. i do not have this problem when using ie 6.0 though. i like the way that firefox reads this because every product category is displayed correctly. is there a way to have the left colum always be different size from the right.im just wondering why this is happening.

alright, one more thing, i figured out that i want both coumns to be 150, but how do i make the text on the index page fit in the middle. it seems to do this on every page except index. (i would like the page to fit on 800X600)
